ELVIS TO APPEAR IN PHILADELPHIA AT NOON ON JAN. 8

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to Elvis Presley fans who urged the U.S. Postal Service -- "Don't be cruel!" -- Postmaster General Marvin Runyon has announced that the Elvis stamp will go on sale nationwide at noon local time on Friday, Jan. 8.
"In response to customer demand, the Elvis stamp will be available to everyone on Elvis' birthday," said Postmaster Richard Nye. "Typically, U.S. postage stamps are sold only in their city of issuance on the first day of issue."
The official first day ceremony for the Elvis stamp will occur late in the evening of Jan. 7, with the stamps being issued just after midnight on Jan. 8. "We will be offering a special pictorial cancellation on January 8," said Nye.
"First-day cancellations are available from the Memphis Post Office," Nye continued. "Customers may buy the stamps at any post office, affix them to self-addressed envelopes addressed to themselves, and then mail them in a larger envelope to Elvis Presley Commemorative Stamp, 555 S. Third, Memphis, Tenn. 38101-9991."
In Philadelphia, the Franklin Mills Post Office, located at 1735 Franklin Mills Circle in the Franklin Mills Mall, will offer a special pictorial postmark to commemorate this event. Customers may obtain the postmark from noon to 7 p.m. Festivities at the mall will include a remote broadcast by WOGL-FM oldies radio station DJ Ron Cade from noon to 2 p.m. The postmark will also be available from noon to 7 p.m. at the Springfield Mall Post Office located in the mall on Baltimore Pike in Delaware County.
The Elvis stamp will be the most popular commemorative stamp ever issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Three hundred million have already been printed, about twice the normal run for a commemorative stamp.
The Postal Service is also selling four Elvis stamp products by mail and phone order only. These items include an Elvis Commemorative Album, Limited Edition Print of the stamp artwork, and the program from the first day of issue ceremony and can be ordered by calling 1-800-STAMP24. Brochures describing them were mailed last month to individuals who voted in the polling that determined whether the "young Elvis" or "concert Elvis" would appear on the stamp.
In addition, more than 100 products featuring the stamp design have been jointly licensed by the Postal Service and Graceland. These are currently for sale at retail stores around the country.
The Elvis stamp kicks off the Postal Service's Legends of American Music Series. This new series will run for several years, featuring great performers from all genres of American music. The same image of Elvis will reappear in June in a rock and roll/rhythm and blues booklet.
A Broadway musicals booklet will take the stage in March, and country and western singers will star in September.
