ELTON JOHN AND MCA RECORDS ANNOUNCE A DONATION OF PROFITS
FROM 'THE LAST SONG' TO SIX AIDS CHARITIES
MCA Records Makes Advance $100,000 Contribution
NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Elton John and MCA Music Entertainment Group Chairman Al Teller have jointly announced that the profits from the release of Elton John's next single and video, "The Last Song," will be donated to six AIDS charities with MCA Records contributing an initial $100,000 advance against the proceeds.
The monies will be distributed by MCA to AIDS Project Los Angeles, Hollywood Supports, Gay Men's Health Crisis Inc., Project Open Hand/Atlanta, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Ryan White Children's Fund at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children.
"Our goal is to create awareness of the AIDS crisis and raise money to support a diverse group of AIDS-related organizations," said Teller. "MCA is pleased to initiate these fundraising efforts and we want especially to acknowledge Elton John for his ongoing efforts on behalf of the AIDS crisis."
In addition, MCA has announced the establishment of an 800 number, 800-695-AIDS, to enable the public to make a donation and receive a special three-song cassette including "The Last Song." Proceeds from these donations will also be contributed to the fight against AIDS.
Entertainment Radio Networks has joined forces in this fundraising effort with the upcoming October broadcast of an exclusive two-hour Elton John radio special, it was announced by the show's executive producer, Dana Miller. "The Elton John Music Special," hosted by Leeza Gibbons, will air the 800 number and encourage listener contributions to the aforementioned charities. The special will be broadcast on more than 300 stations nationwide and all costs of distribution are being underwritten by Entertainment Radio Networks. There will be no paid commercials during the broadcast of this in-depth interview; instead, the special will feature AIDS-related PSAs from entertainment superstars inviting listeners to contribute.
"The Last Song," written by Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin, is about a son, dying of AIDS, who is able to make peace with his father. This song is the second single released from his current platinum album, "The One," produced by Chris Thomas. The video was directed by Gus Van Sant ("My Own Private Idaho" and "Drugstore Cowboy"). Both the video and single will be released on Oct. 13.
