ELIZABETH DOLE ACCEPTS $1 MILLION FROM WINN DIXIE FOR S. FLA. HURRICANE RELIEF; WINN DIXIE'S CONTRIBUTION TO RED CROSS TOTALS $1.25 MILLION
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- At a disaster relief center in Kendall, Fla., Elizabeth Dole, president, The American Red Cross, accepted a $1 million check for hurricane relief in South Florida from Winn-Dixie. Winn--Dixie's contribution is part of a total effort to assist with the Hurricane Andrew recovery in South Florida and Louisiana. The Company has donated a total of $1.25 million to The American Red Cross. The announcement was made today by A. Dano Davis, Chairman, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc.
"Winn-Dixie's roots run very deep in Louisiana and Miami. We opened our first store in Miami in 1925," said Davis. "We are committed to help in whatever way we can during these trying times. The task at hand is to make sure that the needs of those most affected by this disaster are addressed as quickly as possible. We believe that The American Red Cross can meet this challenge effectively and efficiently."
In accepting the $1 million check for relief efforts in South Florida, Dole stated: "This check represents our lead gift, and I hope it inspires others to follow Winn-Dixie's example. The money will support area disaster relief centers and the good work volunteers are doing to support those in need."
South Florida received $1 million of the funds and Louisiana received $250,000. "The American Red Cross was selected to administer the distribution of the monies to the victims of Hurricane Andrew because of its expertise in the area of disaster relief," said Davis. "We are confident that the money will be distributed in a manner that will give the greatest benefit possible."
Winn-Dixie has already offered substantial relief to the victims of Hurricane Andrew in both South Florida and Louisiana. In addition to the $250,000, which was presented to The American Red Cross in Baton Rouge, Winn-Dixie has contributed several truckloads of free ice and fresh bottled water. In South Florida, Winn-Dixie has contributed over 260,000 gallons of fresh bottled water, 163 tons of ice, and truckloads of food, beverages and supplies toward the hurricane recovery efforts. The Company has pledged continued support to each of the affected areas, and will match all Winn-Dixie associate contributions to the Red Cross.
At Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolinas, customers also have the opportunity to assist the hurricane relief and recovery effort through the EVEN IT UP program, developed in cooperation with The Salvation Army. By instructing the checkout cashier to "even it up", their grocery order is rounded out to the next dollar, and the change is dedicated to hurricane relief. Customers may increase their "even it up" donations if they choose.
