ELEPHANT & CASTLE GROUP AWARDED VANCOUVER INDY RACE BEER CONTRACT; COMPANY REPORTS STRONG START-UP OF OPERATIONS AT CALIFORNIA FACILITY

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Elephant & Castle Group Inc. (NASDAQ: PUBSF) announced today that it has been granted by Events Sports Management of Minneapolis, Minn., the exclusive concession for beer products at the 1993 Molson Indy Automobile Road Race to be held in Vancouver, on Aug. 27-29, 1993. The announcement was made by Jeffrey Barnett, Elephant & Castle's chief executive officer, who added that, "The Molson Indy 500 has been a major tourist attraction to Vancouver during the last three years, and Elephant & Castle has done well to establish this new association. After extensive negotiations, we now have a three-year contract to operate the beer garden food fairs at eight separate locations on the 100-acre site of the former Expo '86 fairgrounds. If past attendance is any judge, we expect the event to attract more than 150,000 people and to add a significant bump to our August revenues in 1993."
Mr. Barnett further stated that, "At the same time, Elephant & Castle successfully opened its hotel food and beverage operations at the 150-room Shilo Hilltop Hotel in Pomona, Calif., on July 1. At the Pomona facility, the company is providing dining room service for 220 persons, a cocktail lounge for 120, and banquet and convention facilities for up to 450. With less than one month of operations behind us, the positive financial significance of the Pomona Shilo opportunity is apparent to the company."
The hotel is approximately 90 miles east of Los Angeles en route to Palm Springs, and close to the campus of California State Polytechnic University, which has some 18,000 students. "Both bookings and initial results at Pomona are running ahead of plan," Mr. Barnett said, "and we would be surprised if this facility alone did not account for a substantial increase inthe company's revenues during the next several quarters." The company's hotel food and beverage division provides a similar service at the Shilo Inn in Yuma, Ariz.
Elephant & Castle also reported that it is engaged in preliminary negotiations for the acquisition of other food and beverage facilities accounts. Those negotiations are at a sensitive stage, and there is no assurance that Elephant & Castle will achieve the contracts it desires, the company added.
Elephant & Castle Group, Inc. operates a chain of 13 casual full service English-style restaurants and pubs, 12 of which are located in Canada. The company recently added a food and beverage operations division. On June 29, 1993, the company completed an initial public offering of 1,150,000 common shares in the United States through Laidlaw Equities, Inc.
