ELECTROSOURCE BOARD MEMBER RECEIVES HIGHEST U.S. SCIENCE AWARD

 AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 4 -- Electrosource, Inc. (NASDAQ Small Cap: ELSI), announced that Norman Hackerman, a new member of the company's board of directors, has received the National Medal of Science award.
 The award, presented to Dr. Hackerman by President Clinton at the White House Thursday afternoon, is the nation's highest honor given to scientists.
 Dr. Hackerman also is an Electrosource-designated board member of Horizon Battery Technologies, Inc. (HBTI). HBTI, based in San Marcos, Texas, was formed recently by BDM Technologies, Inc., of McLean, Va., and Electrosource to produce advanced batteries to power electric vehicles in the United States and abroad.
 Dr. Hackerman, 81, a noted research scientist for 60 years, is former president of both the University of Texas and Rice University, and was involved in the Manhattan Project. He has been science advisor to Electrosource since its inception in 1988. He previously served on the board of directors from 1988 until 1992. He was recently re-elected to the board.
 Electrosource also elected two other members to its board.
 Frank Butler, 51, is the founder and sole owner of Custom Masonry Corporation of San Antonio, Texas. Custom Masonry is a subcontracting firm specializing in commercial and institutional masonry construction with annual sales of approximately $12 million. Butler fills a newly created position on the board and brings to the board a varied background of experience in business and labor management.
 Electrosource also elected Todd Templeton, 40, of Austin to fill the unexpired term resulting from the resignation of a director. Templeton is a local private investor involved in real estate development and management as well as securities analysis and investment.
 Electrosource is a publicly traded company headquartered in Austin whose principal business is developing advanced lead acid batteries for commercial applications.
