ELECTROCOM AUTOMATION REPORTS FIRST QUARTER RESULTS

DALLAS, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- ElectroCom Automation Inc. (NYSE: ECA) today reported net income of $5,402,000, or 20 cents per share, on revenues of $78,285,000, for the first quarter of 1993, compared with net income of $5,977,000, or 22 cents a share, on revenues of $91,499,000 for the same period a year ago.
 R. S. Buzard, ElectroCom's president and chief executive officer, said the 1993 first quarter results as compared with those for the same quarter of 1992 reflected lower sales from the company's automated processing operations, which resulted from delays by the U.S. Postal Service with its capital expenditures program in 1992. Several automation program contracts, which were scheduled to be awarded in early 1992, were actually awarded in late 1992 and early 1993. The revenue from these programs will not start until later in 1993.
Buzard said that the company's profit margins remained steady during the first three months. He also pointed out that sales generated by ElectroCom's communications segment in the period rose to $5.4 million, almost double the $2.8 million registered in the same period of 1992.
Buzard noted that the most important event in the first quarter was receipt of a $290 million contract to produce 1,044 Phase II Delivery Bar Code Sorters. This contract, the largest ever received by ElectroCom, will begin delivery in September of 1993 and complete in September of 1994. At peak production, ElectroCom will deliver 20 systems per week.
ElectroCom Automation Inc., manufactures high-speed automated document processing systems for use primarily by the United States Postal Service and other government and commercial customers. The company also manufactures mobile data and voice communications systems and products for public safety and transit authorities, provides funded research and development, and produces materials handling systems and equipment for the commercial warehouse and distribution markets. The company's common stock is listed on the NYSE under the symbol "ECA."
