ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE EMERGENCY ENDS; NO BLACKOUTS EXPERIENCED

TAMPA, Fla., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- At noon today, the Florida Electric Power Coordinating Group, Inc. (FCG) lifted the power supply emergency condition called for Monday, March 15, 1993. The FCG is an association of 37 Florida electric utilities. Improved weather statewide also means no power supply problems are likely tomorrow.
Although the supply situation was tight Monday morning, a combination of events enabled utilities to provide electricity and avoid the need for rotating blackouts.
First and foremost, consumers heeded utility appeals for emergency cutback of power use. The public's efforts assisted in keeping electricity demand lower than was projected. Second, utilities used load management and interruptible load to lower demand. These two programs led to reductions of more than 1,500 megawatts. And third, temperatures were warmer than forecasted in some areas of the state.
Utilities expect the warming trend to continue with still lower demand projected for tomorrow. And efforts continue to bring back some generating units that were unavailable due to problems.
Currently, projected demand for electricity for Tuesday morning is 22,517 megawatts, compared to Monday's projection of 28,740 megawatts. A little more than 7,400 megawatts of generating capacity remains unavailable due to scheduled maintenance and forced outages. Since demand for electricity is projected to decline, this leaves a reserve margin of more than 5,700 megawatts.
Although no rotating blackouts occurred due to supply shortages, storm-related loss of electricity was significant. More than 1.2 million customers were out of service Saturday and more than 120,000 still are without service as of noon Monday.
