 ELAN NAMES GEANEY PRESIDENT AND CREATES OFFICE OF CHAIRMAN
 ATHLONE, Ireland, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Elan Corporation, plc (AMEX: ELN) said Donal J. Geaney, currently chief financial officer, has been appointed president and chief operating officer and named to the newly-created office of the chairman.
 Also named to the office of the chairman were Kenneth W.H. McVey, executive vice president for business planning and development, and Seamus Mulligan, executive vice president for pharmaceutical operations worldwide.
 In commenting on the announcements, Donald E. Panoz, chairman and chief executive officer, said "Geaney's appointment and the new executive structure will streamline strategic decision-making and accelerate worldwide development of Elan's product pipeline. I am personally very pleased to see our organization evolve this way, and to be joined in the chairman's office by three colleagues who have contributed significantly to our success."
 Panoz added, "The depth of our pipeline and the increasing diversity of Elan's worldwide business operations presents opportunities that will be extremely well served by the announcements made today."
 Geaney, formerly a partner in KPMG Peat Marwick, joined Elan in 1987 as executive vice president of corporate planning and was named chief financial officer in 1989.
 McVey, who formerly held management posts at Eli Lilly in Europe and the United Kingdom, joined Elan in 1984 as head of business planning and corporate development and assumed his current position of executive vice president in 1987.
 Geaney and McVey were elected to Elan's board of directors this year.
 Mulligan has been assuming increasing responsibilities since joining Elan in 1984 and was named to his current position of executive vice president in 1989.
