ELAN'S NEW NUTRITIONAL PROGRAMS WILL IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CERTAIN PERSONS WITH PARKINSON'S DISEASE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Elan NutraPharma, a division of Elan Corporation, plc. (AMEX: ELN), announced the introduction of the "Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition(TM)" program and "Hearty Balance(TM)" foods for certain people with Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder which affects 500,000 to one million Americans. Developed in conjunction with leading neurologists, nutritionists and national Parkinson's disease associations, the Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition program is based on scientific research which shows that people with Parkinson's disease who take levodopa or carbidopa-levodopa (Sinemet) have special nutritional requirements.
"After several years of treatment with carbidopa-levodopa which replaces diminished levels of dopamine -- a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls muscle movements -- some patients experience fluctuations in the response to the medication," says Christopher O'Brien, M.D., medical director of the Colorado Neurological Institute. "In addition, after a high protein meal, less levodopa is able to enter the brain because components of protein, called large neutral amino acids or LNAAs, compete with levodopa and prevent its absorption. As a result, patients experience increased difficulty in moving, slowness and tremor. We've found that the higher the protein intake, the less levodopa is available to act on the brain receptors for dopamine."
"Scientific research shows that people with Parkinson's disease need to balance carbohydrates and protein in their diets," explains Christine Tangney, Ph.D., head of the nutrition research department at Rush- Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, and contribution editor of the Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition resource book.
 Introducing Hearty Balance Foods
In addition to the Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition program, Elan NutraPharma is introducing Hearty Balance meals, beverages, soups, snacks and desserts. Hearty Balance foods were developed in association with leading medical and nutrition experts to contain the scientifically tested balance of 7:1 carbohydrates to protein. The extensive line of foods is convenient to order and easy to prepare. Beverages include Very Vanilla, Zesty Strawberry and Dutch Chocolate flavors. The Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition resource book illustrates how to incorporate Hearty Balance into daily meal planning.
"Hearty Balance is the first complete manifestation of Elan's Mind to Market strategy" said Donald E. Panoz, chairman and CEO Elan, Corporation plc. "This is the first Elan developed product that we will market through our own sales force. It also allows us to have greater control of our revenue stream."
The Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition education program provides the latest information of diet and its role in Parkinson's disease and the tools required for making healthy lifestyle choices. It includes a nutrition hotline, 800-4PD-FOOD, staffed by registered dietitians, quarterly newsletters providing nutrition and Parkinson's disease updates and a resources book that provides background information on Parkinson's disease and nutrition; information on exercise; and suggestions on meal planning, including a 14-day meal plan, which serves as a guide for following a diet with a 7:1 balance of carbohydrates to protein.
As with any change in diet and exercise, people with Parkinson's disease should consult with their physicians before beginning the Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition program.
