Actress Joan Collins, villain of TV series Dynasty RUBIK'S Cubes and Filofaxes made a retail comeback this year, according to department store chain John Lewis.

The Filofax was once so important it could contain not only appointments, but a person's whole life between its pages, much like today's smartphones. Which sent me looking for my Filofax from the 1980s for a trip into nostalgia.

It contains a 1989 Press card and, among business cards, one from someone I don't know in New Mexico, an out of date Gold American Express, a ticket to see Seattle Seahawks play the Buffalo Bills in the Kingdome Stadium and notes on how to convert a 9mm Heckler and Koch automatic into a submachine gun. Very useful.

Contacts include Walt Disney publicity, the prison address of a friend, Cyril Shaw, inventor of the cat's eyes, my daughter's address when she lived in Madrid, journalists, publishers, politicians, mates at the pub, a karaoke service, several people now deceased, local friends and colleagues, relatives in Spain and America and a phone number for Joan Collins. How I got that I have no idea.

I wonder if it still works?
