EGGSELLS; EXCLUSIVE Adverts and slogans lasered on to eggs.

Byline: By STEPHEN HAYWARD, Consumer Correspondent

ADVERTISERS have come up with a cracking new idea... putting slogans and logos on to eggs.

When families in America sit down to their breakfast eggs they already find ads for US TV shows on the shells in a new phenomenon known as "Eggvertising".

And advertisers are now hoping to break into the market in Britain. If they do, the new ads will be hard to avoid - only two per cent of households don't buy eggs and we eat 28 million of them a day.

The scheme - which uses hi-tech laser beams to etch messages and logos on to eggs - has been developed by US company Egg- Fusion, who recently struck a deal with TV network CBS to promote its comedy programmes on 35million eggs. Slogans used include Leave The Yolks To Us, Shelling Out Laughs and Funny Side Up. EggFusion expect to be given the go ahead by the European Commission to move into Europe - and are already discussing the idea with British egg producers and retailers.

Egg Fusion, who hope to launch the adverts in the UK next year, say eggs could be used to promote phone and internet services as well as movies and TV shows.

Spokesman Stijn De Preter said: "We want advertising agencies to make it as creative as possible so consumers will get something out of it."

Advertising on food is already popular in America and Australia where corporate slogans have appeared on doughnuts, bread and biscuits.

Farmer Tim Wood, of Blackacre Farm Eggs in Somerset, which supplies 700 stores, said: "Anything that gets people talking about eggs is bound to be good."
