EGG PRODUCERS RESPOND TO ADVERTISING QUESTIONS

BOSTON, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Eggland's Best Eggs of King of Prussia, Pa., today expressed confidence in its product, a high-quality branded egg, and reiterated its willingness to cooperate with local officials in resolving questions regarding Eggland's Best advertising.
Clinical studies have shown that people who included up to 12 Eggland's Best eggs per week as part of a low-fat diet showed no increase in their serum cholesterol levels, even though the eggs contain about as much cholesterol as other eggs. The research was peer reviewed by independent experts and published in the November 1992 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition."
After the office of Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger raised questions about Eggland's Best advertisements that ran for approximately four weeks in late 1992, Eggland's Best voluntarily suspended ads referring to the research studies pending further review and discussion with Mr. Harshbarger's office. Eggland's Best has offered to have additional scientific experts that are highly regarded in the fields of nutrition and cholesterol discuss and review the company's clinical studies in order to resolve concerns about the information given in Eggland's Best advertisements.
Hens selected to produce Eggland's Best eggs are fed a carefully controlled diet including no animal fat or animal by-products. The only add fat is 94 percent unsaturated canola oil. The hens' diet is also enriched with an all natural feed supplement, including rice bran, alfalfa meal, kelp and vitamin E, an antioxidant. The resulting eggs have over eight times as much vitamin E (an antioxidant) as other eggs and a lower ration of saturated to unsaturated fat. However, no causal relationship has been established between these differences and the lack of impact these eggs have on a person's serum cholesterol.
Eggland's Best is not a low or no cholesterol egg according to Jeffrey Garwin, M.D., Ph.D., vice president of medical and quality assurance for Eggland's Best, Inc., developer of the feeding program (patent pending) used to produce Eggland's Best eggs. "The broad consensus of medical experts and organizations, including the American Heart Association and American Dietetic Association, is that a well- balanced,low-saturated fat diet is appropriate for helping to control cholesterol. The clinical tests showed that Eggland's Best eggs could be included in a cholesterol-reducing diet without compromising the cholesterol reducing benefits of the diet," explains Dr. Garwin.
Eggland's Best eggs are produced in the United States by licensed producers, who have been selected because of their high quality control standards and their ability to deliver top quality eggs fast and fresh to food stores and restaurants in their areas.
Under the direction of Dr. Garwin, the Eggland's Best Quality Assurance Laboratory in King of Prussia, Pa. monitors producer performance to ensure that they meet the rigid standards imposed by the company. The company has arranged for a USDA Inspector on site at each production facility to help enforce Eggland's Best strict quality control standards.
Eggland's Best eggs are produced in Massachusetts and New England by a number of producers including Radlo Bros. of Watertown and Westminster Farms in Westminster. Theses are both family businesses that have been producing eggs for over 70 years and 30 years respectively United Co- operative Farmers of Fitchburg process feed for Eggland's Best.
Each Eggland's Best egg is identified by an "EB" imprint on the shell. The packaging has been reviewed and approved by the USDA with FDA concurrence, and each carton of Eggland's Best carries the USDA shield. Although the FDA does not as yet require nutrition labeling of eggs, Eggland's Best eggs elected to provide full nutritional labeling on each carton.
Eggland's Best eggs are available in 45 states. They have been available to Massachusetts for about five months.
