EG&G REPORTS STRONG YEAR END RESULTS

WELLESLEY, Mass., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- EG&G (NYSE: EGG) reported that for the fourth quarter of 1992 earnings per share rose 9.5 percent to 46 cents compared to 42 cents per share last year. Net income was $26 million compared to $24 million in 1991. Fourth quarter sales rose to $689 million from $640 million last year. The net income for the year totaled $88 million or $1.56 per share compared to $81 million or $1.45 per share in 1991. Sales for the year were $2.8 billion as compared to $2.7 billion in 1991. The performance for 1992 is particularly satisfying in light of the fact that a $6.3 million pre-tax charge to earnings was taken in the fourth quarter to facilitate withdrawal from two components businesses.
The strong results for the year represent improved performance in the Department of Energy Support, Defense, and Technical Services segments. The aerospace market continues to be difficult, and the Instruments and Components segments are performing well, but not at levels attained in 1991.
EG&G is also pleased to confirm the extension of its Department of Energy Support contracts at Energy measurements, at Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Co., Inc. (REECo)., and at Rocky Flats. The Energy measurements contract was extended for three years; the REECo contract was extended for 27 months; and the Rocky Flats contract was extended for two years. Earlier this month EG&G along with NASA announced the settlement of a protest involving the Base Operations Contract at the Kennedy Space Center. Pursuant to the settlement, the four original bidders will have the opportunity to submit revised proposals.
NASA has indicated that it expects to make a selection by late summer, 1993. EG&G will respond to the new request from NASA. Meanwhile the Company will continue to provide base operations support during the recompetition period. EG&G has served in that role since Jan. 1, 1983.
EG&G is a Fortune 200 company with annual sales in excess of $2.7 billion. It employs more than 30,000 people in the design and manufacture of laboratory and field-test instruments and electronic and mechanical components for commercial customers worldwide. EG&G provides systems engineering, precision component manufacturing, and test-site operating and management services to many government agencies and laboratories.
