Efficient Networks, Inc., a leading supplier of Digital Subscriber
Line (DSL) modems, has introduced the SpeedStream 3060 ATM over ADSL internal modem utilizing Alcatel Microelectronics' DynaMiTe ADSL
chipset. Alcatel, the ADSL equipment market leader, and Efficient
Networks announce that the new ADSL modem has been positively tested by
Alcatel and is interoperable with the Alcatel 1000 ASAM system, the
leading ADSL central office Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) solution deployed by many top-tier DSL service providers
worldwide. "Our new Alcatel-compatible internal ADSL modem offers
the most affordable CPE solution to the multitude of service providers
who are offering DSL services based on the Alcatel 1000 ASAM system ADSL
central office equipment," said Greg Langdon, vice president of
marketing at Efficient Networks. "The SpeedStream 3060 represents a
new strategic product line extension for Efficient Networks and
reinforces our commitment to offering a wide variety of interoperable
and standards-based ATM/DSL CPE." Product Specifics As the newest
member of Efficient Networks' SpeedStream 3000 line of internal
ADSL modems and adapters, the SpeedStream 3060 is an internal PCI modem
that supports Windows 95, 98 and NT users, and utilizes
industry-standard Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) ADSL technology supplied by
Alcatel Microelectronics. The SpeedStream 3060 easily installs into a
PCI slot of a Windows PC, and provides an affordable solution for
subscribers requiring high speed internet access and remote access to
corporate network resources. The product provides data rates of up to 8
Mbps downstream and 640 Kbps upstream over standard telephone wiring.
The SpeedStream 3060 utilizes Efficient's own ATM ASIC and traffic
management technology. The product also supports a variety of data
encapsulation methods including Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM,
Ethernet over ATM, and IP over ATM. "This new product announcement
positions Efficient Networks as an early supplier of a complete DSL CPE
product family," said Claudia Bacco, senior DSL analyst for
TeleChoice. "Compatibility with the Alcatel DSLAM furthers the goal
of industry interoperability." Today Alcatel holds over 40 percent
of the world market, making it the world leader in ADSL technology.
Alcatel has delivered and installed its ADSL equipment at the American
operators Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell, and Southwestern Bell,
Singapore Telecom, Telia in Sweden, British Telecom, Bell Canada,
Belgacom, Telefonica in Spain, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, and P.T.
Telecom of Indonesia. Furthermore, Alcatel has successfully installed
ADSL networks in China, Korea, Japan and Denmark. "DSL service
providers standardizing on the Alcatel DSLAM platform are in need of a
range of interoperable CPE to meet the requirements of their
subscribers," said Martin De Prycker, Alcatel's vice president
and general manager for Internet and ADSL. "Interoperability of
Efficient Networks' SpeedStream 3060 with the Alcatel DSLAM clearly
helps satisfy this need." Pre-Config Tools Aid Service Providers
The SpeedStream 3060 is also supported by Efficient Networks'
ProfileBuilder(TM) application which enables service providers to
develop pre-configured CPE settings for rapid installation.
ProfileBuilder provides service providers with a set of intuitive,
easy-to-use graphical interfaces for the creation of standard service
profiles to be bundled with the SpeedStream 3000 and 4000 series modems.
By using service profiles, no configuration is required during
installation. Setup is as simple as installing the modem into an
available PCI slot in the PC, inserting a diskette with a configuration
file, and clicking a mouse to install a pre-configured software module.
