EE set to double web speeds; yourmoney.

Byline: Edited by GRAHAM HISCOTT @grahamhiscott

MOBILE network EE is turbo-charging its internet speeds. The merged T-Mobile and Orange operator is doubling how fast its 4G customers can surf the web.

At the moment, most people get around 12megabits per second, but that will be increased to 20Mbps in 10 cities in summer.

Some users will get up to 80Mbps and EE says it has had speeds of 130Mbps in laboratory tests, making the UK one of the fastest countries in the world.

But what does it mean? Current 3G and 4G services are fine for many, but higher speeds let you do everything a bit faster. Yet even EE admits there are limited uses for speeds above 80Mbps right now.

Chief executive Olaf Swantee said: "We don't know what the next killer app is, but our network is ready for it."

The firm, which has actor Kevin Bacon in its ads, hopes to steal a march on rivals Vodafone, 02 and 3, which are yet to launch 4G services. EE wants to get one million 4G customers by Christmas.
