EE Times-Asia Announces Survey Results On Asia's Embedded Systems Development.

HONG KONG, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ --

Global Sources Ltd. (Nasdaq: GSOL) today announced that Electronic Engineering Times-Asia (EE Times-Asia), a bi-weekly publication of eMedia Asia Ltd., has published the results of its 2001 Embedded Systems Development Survey.

The survey, conducted in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean provides a detailed study of the Asian engineering community's level of involvement in embedded systems design and the sectors where it is applied most. Analysis is based on responses from 2,443 design engineers from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, India and other countries in the region.

Commenting on the survey results, Mark A. Saunderson, Publisher of EE Times-Asia said, "The Asia-Pacific market for embedded software operating systems, tools and related services is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 22.5% between 2000 and 2005, higher than that of the worldwide market. In launching this survey, we sought to identify the region's embedded systems programming needs at a time when growth within a number of the region's technology sectors, especially telecommunications and datacom, is spurring demand for these products."

The results of the survey show that demand for embedded systems in Asia-Pacific is most prevalent in datacom/networking products with 47.6% of respondents citing them as primary applications. Country-specific analysis highlights this trend with 48% and 61% of respondents in China and Korea respectively choosing datacom/networking as the primary application. Uptake within Taiwan's datacom/networking sector was slightly less at 41%. The telecommunications and consumer electronics sectors drive demand for embedded systems within the ASEAN region followed closely by the electronics instruments sector.

Compilers and cross compilers were most in demand during the past 12 months with 34% and 52.8% of respondents in Taiwan and ASEAN respectively using them as first-choice development tools for their embedded designs. Simulators were in high demand in Korea with 25.6% of respondents citing it as the tool they used most, while 35% of China's respondents used assemblers and cross assemblers. C, Assembly and C++ were the three most commonly used programming languages used for embedded development across the Asia-Pacific.

More than 47% of respondents region-wide currently develop embedded systems that are networked/web-enabled, while an additional 15% are planning to develop such systems within the next 12 months.

The complete analysis of the survey results is available in the EE Times-Asia November 1-15 print issue and online at http://www.eetasia.com .
