EDWARD MADIGAN NAMED ADVISOR TO CIBA'S GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

ARDSLEY, N.Y., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Ciba-Geigy Corporation, known as Ciba, has appointed former U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan to serve as an advisor to the company's board of directors' Governance Committee.
Madigan has a distinguished political career and has been an influential participant in the formulation of major laws on health and agriculture. He has been an articulate advocate for rational policy in crafting major environmental laws, including the Resource Conservation Recovery Act, the Clean Air Act, and Superfund.
Prior to his appointment as secretary of agriculture during President Bush' term, Madigan spent 18 years in Congress as a representative from Illinois. During his years in the House of Representatives, he served as the senior Republican member on the Agriculture Committee and on the House subcommittee on Health and the Environment.
Richard Barth, Ciba's chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Secretary Madigan has background and experience that will bring a new dimension to Ciba's Governance Committee. We look forward to his views as we continue to develop our policies."
Ciba's five-member Governance Committee of the board of directors was formed in 1991. It focuses on Ciba's Vision 2000 and the commitment to balancing social, economic and environmental responsibilities in the company's agricultural, industrial and pharmaceutical operations. Madigan is the only non-Ciba representative to the committee.
Members of the Governance Committee are Richard Barth, Joseph Sullivan, senior vice president, Tad Kinne, president of Ciba's Additives Division, Vernon Lemaster, president of Ciba's Textile Products Division, and John McGraw, vice president, secretary and general counsel.
