The program paid tribute to 36 teachers who were selected from hundreds of applications by a selection committee made up of representatives from national education organizations. The Center for Civic Education assisted in the organization of the selection committee, the development of the selection criteria and the administration of the selection process. The selection committee then chose one outstanding teacher in each of the 12 subject categories.
At the conclusion of the show, the 36 teachers themselves, by secret ballot under the supervision of Price Waterhouse, selected one of the 12 teachers to be the Outstanding Teacher of 1991.
In addition to being honored as one of this country's leading elementary and secondary school teachers, each of the 36 teachers received a cash honorarium. The schools of the 12 outstanding subject category honorees and that of the Outstanding Teacher of 1991 will also receive an additional cash prize.
Multi-Emmy Award winners Gary Smith and Dwight Hemion served as executive producers of "The American Teacher Awards." Patrick Davidson is the producer.
