EDUCATORS FROM MIAMI, TAMPA, SATELLITE BEACH, GREEN COVE SPRINGS
AND LYNN HAVEN NAMED FINALISTS FOR FLORIDA TEACHER OF THE YEAR
MIAMI, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Soon after five Florida teachers are unexpectedly summoned to their principals' offices this afternoon (Monday, April 20), their anxiety will likely turn to jubilation. Awaiting them will be a phone call from Florida Education Commissioner Betty Castor who will inform them that they have been chosen as the five finalists for the 1993 Florida Department of Education/Burdines Florida Teacher of the Year.
The teachers are Angel Stanford Jones of Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Miami; Cathy Blair of Tampa Palms Elementary in Tampa; Tracey Leon Bailey of Satellite High in Satellite Beach; Janet Keskinen of Green Cove Springs Elementary in Green Cove Springs; and James Thomas Barefield of A. Crawford Mosley High in Lynn Haven.
Following the conversation with Castor, each teacher will be presented a $5,000 check by a Burdines representative. For the fourth year, Florida-based Burdines department stores has contributed $100,000 to the state-run Teacher of the Year program. According to Castor, this gift is the single largest corporate cash contribution to Florida public schools.
In addition to the $5,000 awarded to each of the five finalists, $1,000 will be presented by Burdines to each of their respective schools.
The Florida Department of Education/Burdines Florida Teacher of the Year will be named May 14 in Orlando at a ceremony at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios Florida -- "the place where NICK is made."
The winning teacher will receive a total cash prize of $10,000, a Lenox Crystal trophy and other merchandise.
This year's five finalists were chosen from more than 120,000 public school teachers throughout the state by a Department of Education appointed selection committee representing teachers, principals, parents, and the business community. Each finalist is selected on the basis of superior ability to teach and communicate knowledge of the subject taught, professional development, philosophy of teaching, and outstanding school and community service. The most important qualification is the teacher's superior capacity to inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
"The purpose of the Florida Teacher of the Year Program is to honor one teacher who is representative of all excellent teachers in the state. With so many fine educators among our teaching force, it is surely difficult to single out the most deserving, but these individuals have gone the extra mile," Castor said.
In addition, the remaining 64 district winners will each receive $750 from Burdines, plus $250 each for programs at their respective schools.
