EDS SELECTED TO IMPLEMENT NEW BILLING AND COLLECTIONS SYSTEM FOR TELEFONICA

System will help Spain's PTT adapt quickly to industry changes
DALLAS, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- EDS (NYSE: GME) announced today that it has been selected by Telefonica, Spain's national telecommunications company (PTT), to implement a new billing and collections system. The system, designed by EDS exclusively for Telefonica, will be a critical component in the PTT's positioning in the face of an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing industry.
Competitive pressures within the marketplace are mounting, with increased deregulation, relaxation of trade barriers and the influx of overseas players. In the face of all these changes, European communications entities realize the key to success is the perfection of the basics, such as improved customer service and lower operating costs.
The selection of EDS recognizes the company's position as a leading provider of systems and services to the global telecommunications industry. EDS will combine its expertise in operational support systems with its local resources in Spain to develop the system for Telefonica.
EDS' billing and collections system will enhance Telefonica's service to its customers through three critical functional areas -- message processing, invoice processing and receivables management. The increased efficiency in distribution of bills and availability of management information will in turn maximize profitability for Telefonica itself by ensuring a faster revenue turnaround.
"This contract further expands the longstanding relationship between Telefonica and EDS," said John Harris, president of EDS' Communications Industry Group. "Since 1987, we have been working with Telefonica to apply information technology to enhance the PTT's customer service and financial performance."
The modular design of EDS' system will enable Telefonica to adapt quickly to new developments in the telecommunications industry.
