EDITEK, INC. AND RHONE-POULENC DIAGNOSTICS, LTD. ESTABLISH JOINT VENTURE

BURLINGTON, N.C., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- EDITEK, Inc. (AMEX: EDI.EC) reported today that it has entered into a joint venture with Rhone-Poulenc Diagnostics, Ltd., ("RPDL"), an affiliate of France- based Rhone-Poulenc Agrochimie. The joint venture will be registered as a separate company, equally owned and managed by a board of directors from each firm.
diAGnostix, Inc., as the new Joint Venture will be known, will be responsible for:
 1. Sales and marketing of existing EDITEK products for the
 agrodiagnostic market.
 2. Sales, marketing and North American distribution of RPDL's
agrodiagnostic and food safety testing products and obtaining
approvals from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the
Association of Official Analytical Chemists and regulatory
 agencies.
 3. Distribution of other agrodiagnostic products under agreements
 with third parties.
"Food quality and safety issues will become increasingly important to Americans during the next decade," observed Jean-Claude Fauconnier, director of Glasgow, Scotland-based RPDL. "Rhone-Poulenc is already a leading partner with the U.S. food industry through its Rhone-Poulenc Food Ingredients division, based in Cranbury, N.J. That division's expertise in serving the food industry will be complemented by the diAGnostix products and services. The strategic objective of the joint venture is to become a leader in the development, manufacturing and marketing of agrodiagnostic and food safety testing products, such as salmonella assays."
In addition, Fauconnier suggested that the synergies achieved by joining the EDITEK and RPDL technologies and product lines will foster rapid sales growth for diAGnostix, Inc. within the U.S. market.
James D. Skinner, President and CEO of EDITEK, said: "The promise of the food safety diagnostic testing market foreseen by EDITEK years ago is now on the threshold of reality. With the combined technologies, products and business opportunities before the joint venture, we would expect not only increased sales and profitability, but also creation of the critical mass necessary to fully develop and service the food safety testing business."
Skinner added that EDITEK has extended its current distribution agreement with RPDL to cover, on a non-exclusive basis, the sale and distribution of EDITEK agrodiagnostic products in the Far East and the Pacific rim countries.
EDITEK, Inc. is an emerging, biodiagnostic company with patented technology for the performance of rapid, on-site assays including one- step assays. The Company currently sells products for the human/clinical, drugs of abuse and agrodiagnostics/food safety testing markets. EDITEK also has research, development and supply agreements with Farnam Companies and the United States Department of Defense for veterinary diagnostics and tests for biological substances respectively.
Rhone-Poulenc S.A., based in Courbevoie, France, is the seventh largest chemical company in the world.
