EDISON ARRANGES DISCOUNTS ON COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS
 ROSEMEAD, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A Southern California

Edison customer who buys a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFB) can save $40 in energy costs over the life of the lamp and help significantly to reduce air pollution.
But the retail price of a compact fluorescent bulb can be pretty steep. That's why Edison is supplying discounts through CFB manufacturers this year to reduce the retail price of a limited number of CFBs to $3.50-$11.90 apiece, a savings of nearly two-thirds.
"If we meet our goal this year by persuading residential customers to buy 518,000 CFBs, we will reduce air-polluting nitrogen oxides (NOx) by an amount equivalent to removing 8,400 cars from the highways," Bill Grimm, program manager, said. "If we achieve this goal, air emissions will be reduced by approximately 25 tons of NOx and 17,600 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The energy savings from 518,000 CFBs will avoid the generation of 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. That's enough electricity to energize 50,000 homes for a year."
Even without the Edison discounts, CFBs are a bargain because they last 10 to 13 times longer than ordinary incandescent bulbs and use only one-quarter the energy to produce the equivalent light. Each bulb saves $40 in energy costs over its life, compared with using incandescent lamps.
In addition, recent advances in fluorescent light bulb technology have produced fluorescent light quality equivalent to that of incandescent bulbs.
Edison is working with 13 manufacturers and about 500 Southern California retail outlets to promote the purchase of CFBs. Outlets of Home Depot, Home Base, Builders Emporium, Target Stores, Lamps Plus, Light Bulbs Unlimited and Ralphs Grocery Stores in Edison service territory are currently carrying the compact fluorescent bulbs.
"By offering rebates to customers through manufacturers, we begin a chain of cost reductions that maximizes savings for our customers, who reap the most in benefits," Grimm said.
Edison customers may call the Edison Action Line at 800-952-5062 for stores where the specially priced CFBs are available and for any other information on the CFB program.
