ECOSCIENCE AWARDED TWO U.S. PATENTS FOR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF COCKROACHES AND OTHER INSECTS
ECOSCIENCE AWARDED TWO U.S. PATENTS FOR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
OF COCKROACHES AND OTHER INSECTS
WORCESTER, Mass., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The EcoScience Corporation today announced that U.S. patent No. 5,057,315 was issued to the company for a novel method and device for the biological control of cockroaches. Additionally, EcoScience was issued U.S. patent No. 5,057,316 for a similar method and device for the control of other insects including flies and beetles, such as the corn rootworm. The patents cover natural fungi found to be pathogenic to insects, and the company's unique BioPath(TM) infection chamber technology which is used to cost- effectively deliver lethal doses of the microbial agent to the targeted insect. EcoScience's first biopesticide product to utilize both a fungus and BioPath will be its cockroach product which is expected to receive EPA approval early next year.
Conventional pesticides used to control insects include aerosols, sprays, dusts and bait traps which contain synthetic chemicals that can be harmful to the environment as well as to other organisms. EcoScience is developing a range of naturally occurring fungi that serve as biopesticides for insects and have no demonstrated adverse effects on the environment or other organisms. To deliver the fungus to the targeted insect, the company has developed the BioPath infection chamber which attracts the insect and provides delivery of a lethal dose of the fungal agent to the targeted insect. Once infected, insects are capable of spreading the fungus to other insects in the population before succumbing.
"These two patents dramatically strengthen our proprietary position covering the effective use and delivery of microorganisms, such as fungi, for the control of insects," said James A. Wylie Jr., president and CEO of EcoScience. "In addition to our cockroach product, we are initiating field trials with several additional biopesticide products employing our BioPath technology for the control of filth flies, ants and termites. We anticipate introducing our filth fly product in 1993."
EcoScience Corporation is a natural pest control product company, based in Worcester, focused on discovering and developing a novel line of biopesticides for insects, weeds, and diseases of plants, fruits and vegetables. The company is currently developing products and systems based on naturally occurring, non-genetically engineered microorganisms that do not contaminate soil, groundwater, food, or the home environment. EcoScience produces natural biopesticides that are target specific with few environmental effects by selecting unique microorganisms that are formulated and packaged to act as potent biocontrol agents.
