ECONOMY HIGHLIGHTED IN FLEET-SPONSORED EDITIONS OF REGIONAL NEWS MAGAZINE, 'BROADCAST: NEW ENGLAND' PROVIDENCE, R.I., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleet Financial Group (NYSE: FLT) today announced that its five New England banks will sponsor two syndicated television programs profiling the region's economic resilience and six area residents who have helped to improve local communities. Produced by Broadcast News Networks, the telecasts kick off the "Broadcast: New England" series to be aired by the major network affiliates during November and December. The two half-hour programs, "State of New England" and "Six Who Mattered," examine the New England economy and focus on the people and companies that have successfully weathered the region's economic downturn. The telecasts suggest that New England's economic turnaround will hinge on many factors, including innovation and unique business partnerships. "State of New England" features five companies that are creating new economic opportunities in the fields of environment, global competitiveness, import/export, defense diversification and privatization. Among those highlighted are Patriot Paper Mill, Hyde Park, Mass., whose employees explain how their company has capitalized on environmental awareness and new recycling ventures. Stowe Canoe and Snowshoe Company, Stowe, Vt., is profiled for countering cheaper Canadian imports with innovative product designs and enhanced marketing. Rhode Island-based G-TECH and Northland Tool and Electric, Weare, N.H., share the import/export focus for their respective expertise in gaming and lottery systems, and the repair of machine tools. Sonalysts, a Connecticut defense contractor, is offsetting military cutbacks by providing advanced audio and video technology to the motion picture and cable television industries, and the Massachusetts Correctional Institutions have implemented a pilot project exploring privatization. "State of New England" will air the weeks of Nov. 9 to 22. "Six Who Mattered" is still in production and will air the weeks of Dec. 14 to 27. The "Broadcast: New England" series is Broadcast News Networks' first step in expanding its regional franchise. With existing Fleet sponsorship, the network currently offers the Emmy Award-winning "Broadcast: New York." Broadcast News Networks plans to launch a weekly, half-hour edition of "Broadcast: New England" in January 1993.
