 ECOLOGY TO REPORT ON JOINT INSPECTIONS OF PUGET SOUND MILLS
 The Washington State Department of Ecology officials have scheduled a news availability to explain the results of air quality inspections at four major industrial plants in Tacoma and Everett, Wash., Ecology said today. Air pollution control experts from Ecology and the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Authority (PSAPCA) conducted the inspections as part of a cooperative effort to identify strategies for improved air quality protection.
 The availability is set for Thursday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m., at the Pierce County Annex, 2401 S. 35th St. Tacoma. Ecology Air Quality Program Manager Joe Williams will speak at the conference, joined by PSAPCA Air Pollution Control Officer Anita Frankel. Technical experts from Ecology and PSAPCA will be available for comment. Representatives of the four mills have been invited to attend, as well. Immediately following the news briefing at 9:30, Ecology will give a technical briefing at a PSAPCA board of directors meeting.
 The joint inspection program was announced last February by Ecology Director Christine Gregoire and Frankel. The program was conducted in cooperation with the four mills and the Snohomish and Tacoma-Pierce county health departments.
 The inspections involved:
 -- Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.'s aluminum mill in Tacoma;
 -- Scott Paper Co.'s sulfite pulp mill in Everett;
 -- The Simpson Tacoma Kraft pulp mill; and
 -- Weyerhaeuser Co.'s Everett kraft pulp mill.
 As a result of the joint inspections, Ecology prepared a technical evaluation of each mill and of the state's current regulatory program. Ecology also has prepared a set of preliminary findings and recommendations.
 PSAPCA is the primary air quality agency in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Under state law, Ecology regulates all aluminum reduction mills and all kraft and sulfite pulp mills in Washington. signs to S. 38th St. West. Proceed West on S. 38th St. to Pine St. (2nd light).
