ECOGEN SIGNS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT
WITH ROUSSEL-UCLAF, THE INSTITUT PASTEUR AND INRA
LANGHORNE, Pa., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) today announced it has signed a 3-year research and development agreement with the Institut Pasteur to isolate and develop microorganism-based biopesticides. Other parties to the agreement are Roussel-Uclaf, the industrial sponsor of the cooperative effort, and the Institut Nationale de Recherche Agronomique (INRA), a French governmental agency devoted to agricultural research.
Ecogen and Roussel-Uclaf have agreed to share rights to the biopesticide technology and products developed at the Institut Pasteur during the partnership. Ecogen, Roussel-Uclaf and the Institut Pasteur will establish a scientific committee to coordinate the research; all three parties will have equal representation.
"This strategic agreement strengthens Ecogen's already strong technology base by giving Ecogen access to biopesticide developments at the Institut Pasteur," said John E. Davies, chairman and chief executive officer of Ecogen. "This partnership combined with our previous agreement with Roussel-Uclaf and our recently signed agreement with Italy's 3A provide Ecogen with a solid foundation to have a major presence in Europe -- a key market for biopesticides."
Roussel-Uclaf, headquartered in Paris, is one of the world's largest suppliers of insecticides. Ecogen and Roussel-Uclaf signed a major marketing and research and development agreement in January of 1991. Also headquartered in Paris, the Institut Pasteur is a private French foundation, internationally renowned for its contributions to science. It has pioneered the research of medically important microorganisms and, in recent years, has been a leader in the discovery, characterization and molecular biology of bacillus microorganisms.
This partnership complements Ecogen's current strategic alliances in Europe. In addition to the existing Roussel-Uclaf relationship, Ecogen signed a $9.5 pact last month with Italy's 3A S.r.l. to research and develop biopesticides. 3A is a public-private partnership devoted to the research and development of novel products for three Italian A's: Agricultura, Alimenti (food), and Ambiente (environment).
"Such agreements not only strengthen our European presence, but also help ensure that Ecogen will have the necessary tools and technology to maintain its role as the leader in biological pest control for agricultural uses," said Mr. Davies.
Ecogen Inc. is an agricultural biotechnology company specializing in biological pest control. Ecogen has developed and is marketing a number of novel and proprietary biopesticides, including Cutlass(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, and tree, nut and vine crops; Condor(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, cotton, and soybeans; Foil(R) potato bioinsecticide; Otinem(R) bioinsecticide; and Collego(R) rice bioherbicide. The company recently expanded its product portfolio with the acquisition of Scentry, providing Ecogen with pheromone-based Bee- Scent(TM), Attract 'n Kill(R), NoMate(R), and feeding stimulant-based Compel(R). The company is also developing products for corn, home/garden and ornamental use as well as biofungicides including products for the control of powdery mildew and post harvest rot diseases.
