ECOGEN SIGNS $9.5 MILLION PACT WITH ITALY'S 3A
LANGHORNE, Pa., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN)

today announced it has signed a 3-year, $9.5 million biopesticide research agreement with Italy's 3A S.r.l. The agreement complements the existing $2.1 million biopesticide research and development agreement signed by the two companies in January 1991.
A portion of the funding will be used for the development of formulations and fermentation processes for Ecogen's biofungicide products for the control of powdery mildew on plants and post harvest rot on fruits and vegetables. The funds will also be used for the development of nematodes, small roundworms that control insects in soil and plant stems. These three products will compete in worldwide markets that aggregate nearly $1 billion.
"Europe represents a significant portion of the worldwide market for these products. The relationship with 3A and the establishment of a research and development group in Italy are key to the successful development and marketing of these products," said John E. Davies, chairman and chief executive officer of Ecogen.
The three products will be developed in cooperation with Ecogen's wholly-owned affiliates, Ecogen Israel partnership and Ecogen-Australia Pty., Ltd. A substantial portion of the research, including fermentation and formulation development will be conducted at 3A's technology center in Todi, located in the Umbria region of Italy.
"Work under our three-year agreement signed last year is proceeding, and we look forward to strengthening the relationship between our organizations," said Dr. Gianfranco Formica, president of 3A. "These product development efforts are in keeping with 3A's mission to develop environmentally safe products through the successful integration of nature with modern agricultural biotechnology."
3A is a public-private partnership designed to meld the public interest with private entrepreneurial spirit. 3A's name come from three Italian A's: Agricultura, Alimenti (food), and Ambiente (environment). 3A's centerpiece will be its Agricultural and Food Technology Park, located in the Umbria region of Italy which is funded by the European Economic Community, the Italian government, the region of Umbria and private capital.
