ECOGEN RECEIVES APPROVAL TO SELL BIOPESTICIDES IN ITALY COMPANY WINS FIRST REGISTRATION IN WESTERN EUROPE

LANGHORNE, Pa., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) today announced it has been advised that Intrachem Italia has received approval from the Italian Ministry to sell three of Ecogen's biopesticides, Condor(R), Cutlass(R), and Foil(R) BFC in Italy. Intrachem Italia, an affiliated company of Intrachem (International) S.A., is one of Ecogen's two marketing partners in Italy. Intrachem will begin to market Ecogen's products this growing season.
"These are our first product registrations in Western Europe, which is a significant milestone for Ecogen," said John L. McIntyre, Ecogen's vice president of Business Development and International Distribution. "Italy is a very important market for pesticides and a key country in our European sales effort."
Italy is the sixth largest consumer of agricultural chemical pesticides in the world with consumption totaling more than $1 billion, spending $241 million on insecticides alone.
"Demand in Italy for environmentally compatible insecticides has grown considerably the last few years," said Giacomo Barabino, director of Intrachem (International) SA. "We were attracted to Ecogen for its solid Bt technology and its leadership in providing a complete line of biorational products for agriculture."
Condor, Cutlass and Foil BFC, which will be marketed by Intrachem under the names Rapax(TM), Lepinox(TM) and Jackpot(TM) BFC respectively, are Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)- based biopesticides. Bt is a naturally occurring bacterium, found in the soil, which produces an insecticidal protein effective against certain insect species. These products are currently being sold in the United States, Mexico and several Asian countries for the control of caterpillar and insect pests.
Ecogen's Bt-based products will allow growers in Italy to use a cost-effective, safe, environmentally compatible pest control system to control several insect pests that attack tree fruits, nuts, vines and vegetables. Foil BFC will be the first biopesticide available in Italy for the control of the Colorado potato beetle, a very important pest of crops such as potato, eggplant, pepper and tomato.
Intrachem (International) S.A. is a Geneva-based company specializing in the development and distribution of biological and biotechnology products for agriculture.
Ecogen Inc. is an agricultural biotechnology company specializing in biological pest control. Ecogen has developed and is marketing a number of novel and proprietary biopesticides, including Cutlass(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, and tree, nut and vine crops, Condor(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, cotton, and soybeans, Foil(R) potato bioinsecticide, Otinem(R) bioinsecticide and Collego(R) rice bioherbicide.
