 AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP
LANGHORNE, Pa., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) announced today that is has purchased the remaining 19 percent of FRM Agricultural Sciences Partnership (FASP) and a fermentation plant from Yissum Research Development Company of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
FASP has since been renamed Ecogen Israel Partnership (EIP). With this transaction Ecogen now owns 100 percent of EIP, a fermentation plant and first refusal rights to agricultural biopesticide technology. Ecogen purchased 51 percent in September 1991 and 30 percent in January 1992, with an option on the remaining 19 percent, and first refusal rights.
"Complete ownership of EIP and its technology along with our continuing affiliation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will aid in diversifying our technology," said John E. "Consummation of this deal, along with our recent acquisition of insecticidal nematode technology from Bioenterprises of Australia, increases and fortifies our position as an international developer and marketer of biopesticides."
EIP is developing biopesticides for three major product areas. These product areas, which represent a $1 billion market worldwide, include: hyperparasitic fungi which kill other fungi, such as powdery mildew that infect plant leaves and inhibit photosynthesis, representing a $650 million market worldwide; a yeast formulation which protects stored fruit from post-harvest rot, and a Pseudomonas bacterial biopesticide to control nematodes (microscopic round worms) that infect plant roots. The yeast and bacterial products together will compete in a $500 million market worldwide.
Ecogen Inc. is an agricultural biotechnology company specializing in biological pest control. Ecogen has developed and is marketing a number of novel and proprietary biopesticides, including Cutlass(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, and tree, nut and vine crops, Condor(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, cotton, soybeans and forestry, Foil(R) potato bioinsecticide and Collego(R) rice bioherbicide.
