 ECKERD STREAMLINES ORGANIZATION
CLEARWATER, Fla., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack Eckerd Corporation

today announced plans to streamline its organization to be more responsive and competitive in its markets. Throughout the company's 13- state operation, many functions currently performed by field offices will be consolidated into the Clearwater headquarters.
In addition, the headquarters' organization will be restructured to focus on better service to the new regional operations by eliminating work duplication and non-essential activities.
The company will consolidate its operating regions from eight to six, each headed by a vice president of operations, while broadening the responsibilities of its district managers to include more direct management of pharmacy and express photo.
"We are changing our organization to improve store operations by reducing the layers of management between headquarters and the stores, and streamlining communications and reporting," said Stewart Turley, Jack Eckerd Corporation's chief executive officer. "It will enable us to be more responsive to our customers by having more day-to-day decisions closer to store level." Turley further noted, "These changes will help reduce our overhead expense structure so that we can provide the best possible service to our customers at competitive prices."
Throughout the company, approximately 600 salaried and hourly positions will be affected; however, positions in the retail stores will not be impacted. Eckerd employs over 33,000 associates. The re-engineering of the organization will be implemented over the next 12 months.
