EBASCO SELECTED BY BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY FOR SERVICES TO ENHANCE SAFETY OF SOVIET-DESIGNED NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

NEW YORK, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ebasco Services Incorporated announced today that an Ebasco-led team has been selected by the Brookhaven National Laboratory to provide architect/engineering services to enhance safety of Soviet designed nuclear power plants. This contract is part of the implementation phase of a U.S. program to provide assistance in the area of nuclear safety to countries operating nuclear power plants designed by the former Soviet Union.
The Ebasco team includes Westinghouse Electric Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of nuclear steam supply systems, and Atomenergoexport, the Russian import/export agency for nuclear technology developed in the former Soviet Union.
U.S. assistance is being provided through two programs. The first, known as the Lisbon Nuclear Safety Initiative, provides assistance for nuclear power plants located in Russia and Ukraine. Another, known as Support for Eastern European Democracies, provides assistance for nuclear power plants located in Central and Eastern European countries and the Baltics. The U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for implementing the energy related parts of these programs which are being carried out through the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Under the task-order contract, the Ebasco led team will perform detailed engineering and design services from studies and reports to conceptual and detailed designs. Optional services include supply of equipment, and construction surveillance and inspection.
"This contract will enable our team to go beyond paper studies to actually implement advanced Western nuclear safety technology solutions to reduce the risk of operating these nuclear power plants," said Dr. Robert C. Iotti, Ebasco's senior vice president, Nuclear and Advanced Technology.
