EBASCO CHALLENGES CITY STUDENTS TO DISCOVER ENGINEERING
NEW YORK, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- With Spiderman comic books under

one arm and video tapes under the other, 15 engineers from Ebasco Services Incorporated will entice New York City school students on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 12 and 13, with the wonders of engineering.
The Ebasco engineers will lead four classes each day at Middle School 131 on Hester Street in lower Manhattan as part of the Discover "E" student outreach program for National Engineers Week. The "E" stands for engineering and exploration, this year's theme. Classes will begin with a 12-minute video supplied by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), followed by engineer-led group discussions that will relate engineering to every day life and will include an informal exchange between the engineers and students. If time permits, a short Ebasco-prepared tape on how engineers lead the repair of our nation's infrastructure also will be shown. In addition, students will receive a National Engineers Week Spiderman comic book that encourages minorities to pursue a career in engineering.
"Our goal is to help students understand how math, science and engineering contribute to the world around them and to spark their interest in these disciplines," said Joe Ehasz, Ebasco's chief civil engineer who is leading the company's participation in the program. "With a diminishing number of college students pursuing degrees in engineering, there is a very real need to encourage young people to consider engineering for a career."
Ehasz added that, as the largest engineering and construction company in New York City, Ebasco is concerned about its community and the success of its youth, and has been working with the city's assistant superintendent of schools, Valerie Barton, to determine how to reach the students most effectively.
The Ebasco effort is part of a nationwide drive in which more than 20,000 engineers are expected to participate, reaching about two million students and teachers.
National Engineers Week 1992 is led by Honorary Chairman Jack D. Kuehler, president of the IBM Corporation. National Engineers Week was founded in 1951 by NSPE. The 1992 program is chaired by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Ebasco is a leader in the fields of energy, environment and infrastructure.
