EBASCO/BNFL INC. TEAM SELECTED BY DOE FOR $100 MILLION EFFORT AT HANFORD

NEW YORK, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- EBASCO/BNFL Inc. has been selected by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide conceptual design services for major part of their Tank Waste Remediation System program at the Hanford site near Richland, Wash.
"Our mission is to provide a conceptual design of the Initial Pretreatment Module (IPM) which will destroy or modify some portions or constituents of the high-level radioactive tank wastes," said Dr. Charles Fox, vice president and project manager of Ebasco. "The primary objective of the IPM is to deal with high-level waste tank safety issues. The resolution of the safety issues in the waste tanks is independent of the construction schedule for the high-level waste vitrification plant," he said. "DOE considers this to be an important and pressing project, therefore it is essential to move forward quickly to continue the cleanup progress at Richland."
DOE estimates that the five-year contract with options is valued at approximately $100 million. Conceptual design work is expected to begin in May. The IPM is scheduled for completion in 1999 at an estimated cost of $900 million and will be an integral part of Hanford's Tank Waste Remediation System.
In addition, EBASCO/BNFL Inc. will work on design for some portions of pretreatment of the radioactive tank waste to separate the high-level from the low-level portions of wastes. Approximately 350 people will be involved at the peak of the contract period, which includes several options for additional design services and services during construction of the facility. All of our work will be performed in Richland.
