ILOVED the light, airy interior of Fleet Street Kitchen, the latest addition to Mechu and Apres on Summerrow.

It felt smart and sophisticated and yet suitably informal for dining with children too.

Our waiter Hugo, from Barcelona, made a great fuss of our two boys, giving them "high fives" and calling them "my friends", in a way that reminded us of eating out on holiday in Europe.

The restaurant boasts that it has the only barbacoa grill in the UK.

This barbecue cooking method is popular in Northern Spain and uses South American lumpwood charcoal to give added flavour.

Frankie and Henry, aged six and three, shared the house burger (PS12) and Adam had the 'Big One' burger (PS14), which came with bacon, cheese, onion rings, mushroom and chips.

They thoroughly enjoyed the juicy burgers and garnishes.

I chose the monkfish and prawn skewer (PS14).

Hugo advised I choose a side order to go with it and I'm glad I did as it literally was just one skewer with a handful of monkfish chunks and king prawns on it.

I had the rocket and Parmesan salad (PS3.50), which was the perfect complement.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The monkfish was meaty and the prawns were sensational.

I just wished it hadn't cost PS17.50. I'd been warned Fleet Street was expensive so we'd chosen as frugally as possible from the menu, which does offer steaks for PS22, mixed grills for PS19 and pea risottos for PS12.

Even so, our bill, not including drinks, came to just under PS45. | Fleet Street Kitchen, Fleet Street, Islington Gates, Summerrow, Birmingham (0121 236 0100).
