EASTMAN ANNOUNCES IMPROVED CHDM TECHNOLOGY

KINGSPORT, Tenn., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE: EMN) today announced the development of a significantly improved technology for the production of 1, 4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM). This technology breakthrough was achieved through a joint development program involving Eastman and Davy Process Technology.
Eastman commercialized CHDM in 1959 and has aggressively improved its manufacturing process and expanded CHDM applications. Today, Eastman has a leadership position in CHDM built on technology, manufacturing scale, and strong customer relationships.
Eastman's technical knowledge in CHDM manufacturing, combined with Davy Process Technology's expertise in low pressure hydrogenation technology, led to the breakthrough. The end result provides significant benefits in CHDM manufacturing costs and greater isomer flexibility which may open new application areas for CHDM.
Relevant Davy Process Technology patents are the subject of an exclusive license agreement between the two companies. Additional patents are being sought on the new technology for the production of CHDM.
Davy Process Technology, based in Stockton-on Tees and London, is a leading technology company in John Brown's worldwide engineering and construction business.
Eastman Chemical Company manufactures and markets more than 400 chemicals, fibers and plastics worldwide and is a recent winner of American industry's most prestigious award for quality -- the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
