EASTERN ASSOCIATED ANNOUNCES COAL PROCESSING AND SHIPPING TO BEGIN FEB. 22

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- To honor contracts with its customers and to help protect jobs for its UMWA-represented miners, Eastern Associated Coal Corp. announced today that it will begin processing coal Monday at its Sundial and Rocklick preparation plants.
This coal will be supplied from 13 contract mines whose employees are also represented by the UMWA. The contract mines are not part of the union's selective strike against Eastern Associated and its affiliate, Peabody Coal Company. All 2,300 production employees at Eastern Associated's 10 West Virginia mines and related facilities are members of the UMWA.
"We need to begin processing and shipping this coal to prevent our customers from turning to other suppliers and to assure those customers that we will meet our obligations," Peter B. Lilly, Eastern Associated president, said.
"Many of our customers have expressed significant concerns about our ability to fulfill orders," Lilly added. "As I've said, we are particularly concerned about jeopardizing our relationships with such U.S. customers as ARMCO Steel, Inland Steel and LTV Steel -- along with export customers such as Hoogovens (Holland), ATIC (France), British Steel, and Swedish Steel.
"It's critical that we assure customers that they can count on Eastern Associated to fulfill its commitments," Lilly said. "Keeping customers satisfied is also the best way to help protect UMWA jobs."
