Eastenders star Steve McFadden is furious with TV bosses...after having to relive his drink-drive shame for the show.

Steve's character Phil Mitchell is locked up when his boozy antics land him in trouble.

But the actor - banned from driving for 18 months after being caught over the limit in his Rolls-Royce - hit the roof when he read the script.

Steve, 37, who now cycles from his North London home to the EastEnders studios, stormed: "Are they taking the piss?"

A BBC insider said: "Steve thought the writers were taking a joke too far.

"He was deeply ashamed when he was nicked.

"He was angry when he first saw the script but the story was a coincidence and in the end he saw the funny side."

The episode showing Phil arriving drunk at court when he is prosecuted for botching car repairs will be screened this summer.
