EAST OHIO GAS RESPONDS TO PLAIN DEALER ARTICLE ON INCREASING GAS COSTS

CLEVELAND, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The East Ohio Gas Company today issued the following statement in response to a Plain Dealer article in today's edition:
"No one knows what transition costs for this regulatory change are right now and we won't know for at least two to three more months. The $100 a year increase in gas bills reported by The Plain Dealer today is very premature and little more than a guess. Our estimate, based on real numbers provided by our gas suppliers, but not yet approved by the FERC, is that East Ohio Gas customers could see increases of as little as $10-$15 a year, due to the restructuring.
"We will be working with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) and the Ohio Consumer's Counsel (OCC) to make sure any costs that are passed on to customers are fair and equitable.
"The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) mandates these costs be passed on and they feel this regulatory change will benefit the residential customer in the long run. This regulatory change is a major restructuring of the natural gas industry and basically mandates some cost re-allocations in order to enhance competition. Under this new regulation, we will continue to protect our customers' interests and shield them from any and all unwarranted cost re-allocations. We think we do a better job than anyone else of protecting our customers.
"It's important to note that gas costs right now are about the same as they were ten years ago, and that East Ohio Gas has not filed for a base rate increase, since 1986. The base rate covers the company's cost of providing service to customers and is the only portion of the bill that we make any profit on. We think that shows a good record of keeping costs down to our customers."
