EARN WHILE YOU LEARN; IN the second ECHO feature for GCSE week, CLAIRE STOKER looks at modern apprenticeships.

MODERN apprenticeships offer the chance to do real work and earn a wage while getting respected qualifications to give you the start you need in your chosen career.

Many organisations offer modern apprenticeships, from painting and decorating to the civil service.

Greater Merseyside Learning and Skills Council, GMLSC, run the scheme in this area and they are responsible for 12,000 modern apprenticeships. Penny Pallett, of GMLSC, said: ``Modern apprenticeships have been developed for 16 to 24-year-olds who have left full-time education or are already in employment.

``They are nationally recognised programmes designed by industry to equip young people with practical skills for work.''

There are two levels of modern apprenticeship available depending on experience and ability, the foundation or advanced.

The foundation lasts for at least 12 months and apprentices study for a national vocational qualification, NVQ, at level two, a relevant Key Skills and where available, a technical certificate.

Foundation apprenticeships will either be employed and receiving a wage or be on work placement where they receive a weekly allowance.

Young people on advanced apprenticeships will be in full-time employment and earning an appropriate salary. They take at least two years to achieve with NVQ level three, Key Skills and technical certificate.

The cost of training is funded by the GMLSC but Ms Pallett explained: ``The employer must pay employed modern apprenticeships an acceptable wage.''
