Thurston High sophomore earns Scouting's top rank

Evan Townsend, a member of Troop No. 75 in Springfield, will be honored at an Eagle Court of Honor at 7 p.m. today at the Thurston Grange Hall in Springfield. Eagle Scout is the highest honor awarded by the Boy Scouts.

Townsend, a sophomore at Thurston High School, is the son of Don and Kathy Townsend of Springfield.

Townsend, who began Scouting in second grade, has earned 30 merit badges and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also has attended Camp Baker, Camp Makualla and Camp Easton.

Townsend's Eagle Scout service project, completed for Honeyman State Park, involved using large diameter logs to construct a bench and gate using pioneer woodworking methods.

The project required 100 hours and seven helpers.
