DALLAS, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- EMASS(R), an E-Systems (NYSE: ESY)commercial products business unit, today announced its first commercial patent for a technology that stores unprecedented amounts of data, from 5 terabytes to 10,000 terabytes. The patent with 36 claims, first filed in November 1989 and granted recently, covers mass storage systems--and with supporting technology will be available for licensing under a program being formulated at E-Systems.
In general, technology patents tend to cover very small segments of a total solution. "The granted patent is a unique end-to-end patent which is a benefit to customers as well as our technology partners," said Garland Division Vice President and General Manager Marshall D. Williamson.
The E-Systems products covered by the patent include the DataTower(R) archive, a phone booth size structure that can store nearly 6 terabytes of data (1 terabyte equals 500 billion pages of text); the DataLibrary(R) archive, which can store up to 10,000 terabytes; the technology that drives the high-speed tape drive; the system software; the D2 data cassettes storage media, which pack as much as 25 gigabytes on a VHS-size cassette.
