E COLI OUTBREAK AT NORTHGATE SIZZLER

SEATTLE, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Northgate Sizzler Restaurant at 550 Northeast Northgate Way, in Seattle, remains closed.
Eight cases of E Coli O157:H7 have been confirmed in people who ate at the restaurant. The eighth case was confirmed earlier today in an 8-year-old King County boy who ate at the Northgate Sizzler on Aug. 16 and became ill. He was not hospitalized and is fine now. Of the eight cases, three are children.
No cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) have been reported to date. At this point, there is still no common food source. All of those who were ill ate lettuce at the salad bar. But at the same time, many people ate the lettuce and did not become ill.
The Seattle/King County Health Department, the State Health Department, and the Federal Food and Drug Administration are investigating.
There is a ninth case which is highly probable in a 25-year-old Pierce County man who ate at the Northgate Sizzler. He had E Coli, but it is not yet confirmed which type.
The reopening of Sizzler hinges on further evaluation of several cases of diarrheal illnesses. Pending the outcome of that evaluation, the Seattle/King County Department of Public Health will make a determination about reopening Sizzler.
Prior to reopening, the department will require an inspection and that new food products be used. It appears that the outbreak was confined to the period of Aug. 14 through 18, but the department wants to be sure these last few reported cases are not outside that time frame.
Any person who ate at the Northgate Sizzler and has concerns should call Dr. Russ Alexander, 206-296-4774. The E Coli hotline is 206-296-4949.
