Commercial banks in Netherlands are trying to play down the exposure they have to the mortgage sector.

The banks have been trying to prove to the ECB, their future regulator, that mortgages accounting for about a third of their balance sheets are less risky than they look on paper.

The Dutch Banking Association, NVB, is expected to travel to Europe soon to discuss its position with concerned regulators.
