Durrani submits adjournment motion for institution of Passco centers in South Punjab.

ISLAMABAD, November 12, 2009 (Balochistan Times): Former Information Minister Senator Mohammed Ali Durrani Thursday urged the government to respond appropriately for disposal of the grievances of the wheat and paddy growers of South Punjab as no Passco centre was buying paddy and this would result into massive wheat shortfall next year. Talking to the journalists here at the Parliament House on Thursday, Durrani said he had submitted an adjournment motion with the Upper House of the Parliament about ignoring Southern Punjab in Passco for the purchase of paddy crop as not a single purchase centre had been established in the most fertile divisions of Punjab. I have moved an adjournment motion regarding the issue of public importance, as reported in various sections of the Press that the Passco has no single centre in entire South Punjab including Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan and D.G Khan Divisions despite the fact that South Punjab is the richest paddy crop producing area in the Province of Punjab, he said. It is pertinent to mention here that from Sahiwal to Sadiqabad a single Passco centre for paddy is not working to facilitate the poor farmers of the area. Rather, all Passco Centres have been established in Upper Punjab and Sindh. Owing to this, the farmers of South Punjab are suffering badly as the government is not buying the paddy crop and the private buyers are constantly exploiting the poor farmers. This paddy crop consists of thousand of tones of paddy would which might badly affect the forthcoming wheat crop because the farmers would not be able to sow the wheat crop in time due to unavailability of resources, he deplored. In the present circumstances, each days delay in sowing of wheat crop would be resulting into 20 KG per acre shortfall in wheat production. This ignorable behaviour of the ministry of not buying the paddy crop in South Punjab from the poor growers would result in massive food crisis next year, he added. He said he wanted to take up the issue at the Senate session so as the responsibility is fixed and appropriate measures are taken for redressal of the grievances of the wheat and paddy-growing farmers.
