Durkan joins Fine Gael in Europe bid.

Byline: MIRROR REPORTER

FORMER SDLP leader Mark Durkan is to contest the upcoming European elections for Fine Gael in Dublin.

But the 58-year-old politician will continue to be based in Co Derry and will not live in the capital.

He said he hopes to give the North a voice in Europe after Brexit by running for election in the Republic.

Mr Durkan, a former deputy first minister at Stormont, was confirmed as a Fine Gael election candidate yesterday.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: "At this point in time, as Brexit continues to present enormous challenges, we need a place to hear people like Mark Durkan and that place is in the European Parliament."
