Dunlop Wellies Withstand Rapid Temperature Changes At Riverside Bakery

Quick temperature changes and fats used during production have been causing major hygiene problems for hot pie and quiche manufacturer, Riverside Bakery of Nottingham, part of Northern Foods Plc.

As well as being able to resist damage by animal and vegetable fats, the footwear worn by factory personnel must be able to cope with frequent and abrupt changes in heat intensity.

After food is processed in the vegetable preparation area and butchery it is carried into the chiller. The same personnel then hose down all the machinery, work surfaces and floors in the preparation rooms with water at near scalding temperature. The use of protective, waterproof boots is paramount in such wet conditions.

However, the change in temperature from 100 [degrees] to 0 [degree] C combined with the effect of the fats has been causing their wellingtons boots to crack and require replacement after only a few week's wear.

In their search for a solution, Riverside Bakery have been testing various boots including the Foodtek range of white boots from Dunlop. Specially designed for the food and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, these are made from an ultra high grade PVC/nitrile compound which provides additional resistance to animal by-products. The boots have also undergone flex tests by Dunlop at temperatures down to-50 [degrees] C for the uppers and -35 [degrees] C for the soles!

Styles on trial at Riverside have included the men's Safety Boot, which has a carbon steel toe cap and a women's knee boot.

So far the Dunlop Foodtek wellingtons have outlasted the previous design, say the suppliers, Dunlop Footwear Ltd, Burlington House, Cosby Road North, Liverpool, tel: 051-920 4163.
