GOLETA, Calif. - Oregon's offense was stifled Sunday afternoon, and it cost the Ducks a sweep against the No. 22-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
Left-hander Justin Jacome silenced the No. 20-ranked Ducks, beating them 1-0, after allowing five hits and three walks in eight innings of work. He also struck out 10 for the Gauchos, who avoided being swept by the Ducks in the three-game series.
Oregon (10-2) did threaten in the ninth inning afer Phil Craig-St. Louis singled off Jacome to start the inning, which forced Gauchos coach Andrew Checketts to pull his starter.
Mark Karaviotis then executed a sacrifice bunt that moved Craig-St. Louis to second. With one out, Craig-St. Louis advanced to third on a wild pitch, bringing the tying run 90 feet from home. J.D. Bryant, though, struck out for the second out of the inning, and Shaun Chase popped up to end the game and Oregon's rally.
Oregon had its chances. It loaded the bases in the fourth inning as well against Jacome and Santa Barbara, but Bryant flew out to end that threat.
Jack Karraker took his first loss of the season for the Ducks. He pitched six innings and allowed three hits and one run. He also struck out four before being replaced by Stephen Nogosek in the seventh.
Craig-St. Louis finished with two of the Ducks' five hits in the game. Matt Eurest, Mitchell Tolman and Brandon Cuddy had the others.
Cameron Newell provided the Gauchos with their only offense of the game in the bottom of the fourth. He hit a solo home run off Karrker.
The Gauchos finished the game with four hits.
Sunday's loss was the first time this season Oregon had been shut out. The Ducks saw their eight-game win streak snapped a head of their home series Friday against St. John's. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
Next weekend's series kicks off five straight home games for Oregon before they begin Pac-12 play March 13 at California.
The Ducks play their first conference series at home March 20 when they host Arizona State.
