Dubai Celebration Chain on track.
The iconic Dubai Celebration Chain is well on its way to setting the record for the world's longest 22-carat gold chain, one of the jewelers involved in the project has told XPRESS.
"This is a land which does not have 'impossible' in its dictionary and the 'Dubai Celebration Chain' is a salute to this spirit and a commemoration to the fantastic journey of the Dubai Shopping Festival'. We are nearly there, on the verge of completing our part of the chain that will be showcased as a whole in public in the New Year," said Joy Alukkas, Chairman & MD of Joyalukkas Group, one of the five Dubai-based jewellers involved in the making of the 5km long chain weighing all of 180 kilos.
"The shopping festival has captured the hearts of both residents and tourists alike for 19 years but this one, the 20th had to be made special and what better way than by commemorating it with a special chain the world has never seen before. We are proud to be doing our bit in it," said Alukkas, whose company is making a kilometer of the chain, weighing almost 36 kilos.
Part of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) promotions, the world record attempt is being overseen by Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group in association with four other major jewellers in town - Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Siroya, Sky Jewellers and Jewel One.
"In today's rate the whole chain will be worth approximately Dh28 million. Just for finishing the making of our part of the Dubai Celebration Chain, we required more than 36,000 man hours whereby about 100 trained craftsmen each put in 8 hours of hard work every day for 45 days," Henry George, Retail Manager - GCC operations, Joyalukkas told XPRESS.
The historic piece, after two or three days of full public display from around January 2, will be cut and sold as Bracelets and Chains, giving residents and tourists a chance to own a piece of history. On purchase they will also get the opportunity to win 100 Kgs of gold and 40 Carat diamonds during the DSF, that will run from January 1 to February 1,2015. "The pre-booking offer to consumers of the 'Dubai Celebration Chain' is scheduled to commence early next week," added George.
Once the record is formally accepted by the Guiness Book of World Records, it will beat the previous record set right here in Dubai when a 4.1km-long gold chain was unveiled as part of DSF celebrations in 1999. The chain weighing almost 240 kilos was machine made and needed more than 350 craftsmen back then. Dubai Celebration Chain will be completely handmade.
