Dual Op Amp Adds New Value To Mid-Range Designs, Combines Rail-to-Rail Output, Guaranteed 2.7-, 5- Or 10V Operation; Targeted For Portable Applications, the Flexible CMOS LMC272 from National Semiconductor Provides Low-Voltage Operation, 2-15V Range For Design Upgrades.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 1996--National Semiconductor Corporation today announced a CMOS dual operational amplifier that combines rail-to-rail output stages, high accuracy and guaranteed 2.7-, 5- or 10V operation over a wide 2-15V operating range.

The flexible LMC272 is targeted for portable and battery-powered designs in such applications as transducer amplifiers, photo detector preamplifiers, sample and hold circuits, D-to-A converters and filters.

"The LMC272 offers National's customers a mid-range upgrade from decades-old commodity parts. It has better mid-range specifications than what has been available," according to Maria Laughlin, National's strategic marketing manager. "We believe that its rail-to-rail output, wide operating range, guaranteed operating voltages and high accuracy make the LMC272 the industry's best mid-range op amp," she said.

The rail-to-rail output swing increases the dynamic range while delivering maximum power to the load. Guaranteed operating voltages give designers better control of system performance while an operating range down to 2V provides dependable battery operation. Furthermore, the very low input-bias current of 90pA provides higher accuracy than what has been available.

"The LMC272 is the first in a planned series of high-performance mid-range op amps that will offer National's customers a spectrum of design options, from commodity parts to high-end rail-to-rail input-output devices," Laughlin stated. "The mid-range devices build on National's dominance in commodity and high-end op amps," she said.

Key features and benefits include: Input common mode voltage range that extends below the negative supply rail to allow ground sensing (current measurement), a high voltage gain of 88dB, unity gain bandwidth of 2.2MHz, low supply current of 1mA per amplifier and an input voltage range of -0.3 to 4.2V. Other specifications include a bandwidth of 3MHz (at 25 degrees C, 3V) and an operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C.

Price and Availability

Available now, the LMC272CN (8-pin DIP) and LMC272CM (8-pin SOIC) are priced at $0.50 each in 1000-unit quantities. The LMC272CMM in a plastic 8-pin MSOP package is $0.70.
