DuPont to expand Sontara line.

An official decision to expand its "Sontara" hydroentangled nonwovens production has finally been made by DuPont, Wilmington, DE. Director-Sontara Thomas West confirmed last month that the company will expand its Sontara capacity with a new facility in Utsonomiya, Japan. The decision has been expected for some time, as the company had reportedly been considering expansions in both Europe and Asia.

Currently, said Mr. West, a project team is in place in Utsonomiya and will begin designing the new facility within the next few weeks. The new Sontara plant will be at the same site as an existing "Tyvek" facility currently under construction. The additional Sontara capacity will have much greater product flexibility, explained Mr. West. "We have simplified the process to open up new product capabilities," he said, adding that the Asia Pacific region has proven to be an area where Sontara's unique properties have found increased application. Construction on the line is expected to begin in late 1994 or early 1995; a line in Europe is still planned as the next step after the Japanese expansion.
